Composting Toilets

dot Clivus Multrum

The Clivus Multrum waterless toilet system is a tested, approved and accepted system for dealing with human waste in public facilities and domestic applications. The Clivus is a complete toilet system that decomposes waste in an aerobic environment without producing polluting end products or effluent. There are 2 models CM8 (Suitable for small homes, holiday houses etc) and LCM20 (Suitable for larger homes with more than one toilet and small to medium sized public facilities).

The Clivus uses no water, no chemicals, has no harmful discharge and is cost effective. The process works on the same principle as an ordinary garden compost bin. Waste is collected in the composting chamber along with carbon material such as wood shavings and garden clippings. The materials gradually decompose in the chambers aerated environment. The Clivus Multrum has a small electric fan in the vent pipe which creates airflow into the system and ensures any smells are drawn away.

The benefits of this toilet System are:

  • Very tolerant of short term extremes in use – both high and low,
  • Readily accommodated in all forms of buildings construction, need not be in a separate building,
  • Performance not damaged by variations in usage levels and temperature,
  • Is a self contained, waterless, odourless toilet treatment system,
  • Uses no Chemicals, heat or water and has no polluting discharge,
  • Can save up to 60,000 litres of water per year in the average home,
  • Easy Cleaning: Toilet bowl is easily cleaned with biodegradable cleaner and a toilet brush. The seat and outside can be wiped with some disinfectant and a damp cloth,
  • The end product is removed via a large hatch at the front of the composting tank and can be dug into the garden. It is only necessary to empty the chamber once or twice a year, and
  • Compost hatch is installed underneath the floor – see brochure for diagrams and more information.
